Open source, making code available to anyone to use and change, transformed the software world and is changing the hardware world as well. The approach can lower the barrier to entry to entrepreneurs who want to launch a new business, in any space, says LittleBits Founder and CEO Ayah Bdeir. "You can get access to more tools, prototypes, access to tutorials online. You don't have to reinvent the wheel every time you want to make something, so you tap into resources and are able to get farther quicker."

Adds Bdeir, "it gets more people getting started."
