After five years of teaching prospective franchisees how tosucceed in the real world of franchising, The Franchise Center atthe University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is practicing what itpreaches. According to the center's executive director CarolynGough, UTEP is now "franchising The Franchise Center," aswell as maintaining its original program.
The center was initially designed for people in the El Paso areawho were looking for ways to start their own businesses. But anoverwhelming response has kicked this unique outreach program intohigh gear, and The Franchise Center is looking to expand intouniversities worldwide. For $10,000, universities can set upfranchise centers on their own campuses. UTEP will provide schoolswith literature, software and business plans, as well as teachpersonnel how to get sponsors and volunteers. "We'vealready established a center at the University ofJyväskylä in Finland," Gough says.
